How to read a GIA or HRD certificate

A grading report is the one document that lets you compare a diamond on facts rather than lighting. Read properly, it tells you what the stone is; read casually, it is a crest and a number. This guide walks through every field on a GIA or HRD report — and how to check the paper yourself.

What a grading report is — and is not

A grading report is an independent laboratory's expert opinion of a loose diamond, recorded at a moment in time. Trained graders examine the stone under controlled light and instruments, then document its measurements, weight, color, clarity, and cut. The lab does not sell the stone and has no stake in the sale.

It is not an appraisal. A report carries no price and assigns no monetary value; it describes the stone, not the market. Nor does it grade the finished jewel — labs grade diamonds unmounted, before setting, because a mounting can hide the very characteristics being graded.

Treat it as the stone's identity document. Everything else — the setting, the metal, the making — is judged elsewhere.

The anatomy: number, shape, carat

Every report opens the same way. A unique report number ties the document to the stone's record in the lab's database — this is the field that makes verification possible. Shape and cutting style name what you are looking at: round brilliant, oval brilliant, emerald cut.

Measurements record the stone's dimensions in millimetres — for a round, the minimum and maximum diameter and the depth. Carat weight is the stone's mass, recorded to the hundredth of a carat. Two stones of equal weight can carry very different measurements; read together, the numbers tell you how the weight is distributed.

Color and clarity

Color is graded on the D-to-Z scale, where D is colorless and each step admits a touch more warmth. The differences between neighbouring grades are subtle by design; graders judge them against master stones under standardized light. Much of the scale's upper range typically reads white to the naked eye once a stone is set.

Clarity records the stone's internal and surface characteristics — inclusions and blemishes — on a scale that runs from Flawless through VVS, VS, and SI to Included. Most reports carry a plot: a diagram mapping each characteristic by type and position. The plot is worth reading; two stones can share a grade while one carries its inclusion dead centre and the other hides it under a prong.

Some compact report formats omit the plot and rely instead on a laser inscription — a microscopic report number etched on the stone's girdle.

Cut, polish, symmetry

Cut is the human contribution, and the grade most visible on the finger. For standard round brilliants, the major labs assign an overall cut grade — on a scale that runs from Excellent downwards — based on the stone's proportions and how they return light. Fancy shapes typically receive no overall cut grade; you read their proportions yourself, or trust the eye of whoever selects the stone.

Polish and symmetry are graded separately on every shape. Polish describes the finish of the facet surfaces; symmetry describes how precisely the facets align. Excellent and Very Good are the grades worth insisting on — below that, the shortfall can be visible.

Fluorescence, plainly

Fluorescence records how a diamond responds to ultraviolet light, on a scale that typically runs from None to Very Strong. It is a description, not a defect. Under ordinary light it is usually invisible.

When does it matter? Strong blue fluorescence can, in rare cases, lend a very high-color stone a faint haziness — and can, usefully, make a lower-color stone face up whiter. The market often discounts strong fluorescence, which makes it worth an honest look in daylight rather than a reflexive rejection. If the stone is beautiful in the light you live in, the field is a footnote.

GIA and HRD, honestly

GIA — the Gemological Institute of America — devised the 4Cs grading system and remains the global default; a GIA number is understood in every market. HRD Antwerp grew out of the Antwerp diamond trade and carries particular weight in Europe. Both are established, independent laboratories with rigorous standards.

Grading is expert judgement, not physics, so two labs will not always agree to the letter — a stone may sit a grade apart between houses. What matters is that the lab is independent and the report is verifiable. We work with both, and the choice follows the stone, not fashion.

Verify the report yourself

Every legitimate report can be checked in under a minute. Both GIA and HRD maintain online databases; enter the report number on the lab's own website and compare what appears against the paper in your hand — carat, measurements, grades. If the record does not match, or does not exist, walk away.

Cross-check the physical stone where you can. Many certified stones carry a laser inscription of the report number on the girdle, visible under magnification. And verify on the lab's own site, typed by hand — never through a link someone hands you.

Asked often

Is a GIA certificate the same as an appraisal?
No. A grading report describes the stone — its weight, color, clarity, and cut — and assigns no monetary value. An appraisal estimates value, usually for insurance, and is a separate document.
GIA or HRD — which is better?
Both are established, independent laboratories. GIA is the global default and devised the 4Cs; HRD Antwerp carries particular weight in the European trade. We deliver stones over 0.5 carat with one or the other, chosen per stone.
How do I check whether a diamond certificate is genuine?
Enter the report number on the issuing lab's own website — both GIA and HRD maintain online databases — and compare the record against the paper: carat, measurements, grades. Where the stone carries a girdle inscription, match it under magnification.
Does every diamond come with a certificate?
In the trade, small stones are often sold uncertified; grading fees weigh heavier at small sizes. At Ariek, every stone over 0.5 carat comes with a GIA or HRD report, and you see it before you confirm.
